Background Information - Questions.
1. The American Dream:
a. Define what the American Dream means, in your own words if you can.
The American Dream means, well not much to me. But, I would have to say money, power and family with a social life, happiness all round really.
b. Where does this idea stem from?
It came from America, apparently started in Virginia, 1774. It was mainly recognised in 19th century where people made "their own ceilings as high as they wanted".
c. Find and save 2-3 quotes the summarize the essence of the American dream.

The Great Depression started around 4th of September, 1929.
b. What were the causes of the Great Depression?
The causes where from major banks and stock markets crashing, as well as not understanding ‘supply and demand’ or using it as it is meant to be
c. How was farming and agriculture in America affected by the Great Depression?
Farming and agriculture was affected greatly, with stock market crashes, they lost a lot of money, losing profits if any. Smaller farms closing down, bringing down availability in work.
d. What is the "Dust Bowl" affect that happened as a consequence of the Great Depression? Find an image to support your research.
The "Dust Bowl", a sand storm, caused by erosion and overworking of farmlands, caused by the great depression. With the great depression, farmers were forced into overworking their lands to keep them alive, not realising the consequences. Due to the overworking the soil become lose, lack in nutrients to keep the soil healthy, with high winds it caused the soil
to break and lift up.

a. Where and when was he born, when did he die and how old was he?
John Steinbeck was born, February 27, 1902 in Salinas, California, United States of America he was 66 when he had died in December 20, 1968.
b. Summarize Steinbeck's early family history.
His early history involved him spending his summers working on ranchers and such, where he learnt the harsh conditions of migrant workers.
c. What experiences did Steinbeck have as a teenager that greatly inspired both his novels Grapes pf Wrath and Of Mice and Men?
As above, he spent his summers working on ranchers, where he had learnt the cruel nature of humans, and the harsh conditions of migrant workers, which inspired his books.
d. What was his first successful novel?
Tortilla Flat was Steinbeck's first critical success, which won a gold medal and later becoming a movie in 1942.
e. Why was his novel 'Grapes of Wrath banned in some places?
Due to the negative portral of capitalism and sympanthy for the plight of workers, many found it misrepresented the conditions and therefore was bannded from public schools and liabrarys.

This shows he values the workers, and their conditions, he made the bigger people, who were in more fincial control look bad and that it wasnt right what they had done or where doing.

"To a Mouse, on Turning Her Up in her Nest with the Plough" It is a poem about how small creatures, with very little, steal, find shelter where they can, simply lives, not cared about. Its significance to Steinbeck's novel is that, the workers, have taken the place of the mice, treated unkindly and unfair, living through harsh conditions.
